My Standards

Posted on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 at 10:51 am

My sweet Noelle is having a hard time.  I think the anxiety of the upcoming change from pre-schooler to elementary schooler is underlying the behavior issues.  So, I am simultaneously trying to deal with the behavior while helping relieve the anxiety.

My standards have shifted, though.  She tantrumed at school for 3 hours or so yesterday.  There were consequences … she lost all her dresses and has to earn them back one day of good behavior at a time, she didn’t get to go out to dinner and shopping with Grandma for her birthday last night — that’ll come back as an option next week after she’s had a good set of days at school, no desert, no stones, etc. If bad today she’ll lose all her skirts and skorts.  In an attempt at some positive reinforcement as well, there is a new household rule that anyone who is good gets some special one-on-one quiet time with me to read a book and chat every night, so if she is good today, she and I will sit down and do some of that Pook Seek and Find book she pulled out this morning.

I did find myself thinking yesterday, though, that at least she had her underwear on and didn’t kick or hit anyone during the tantrum.  Clearly my standards are dropping. :-)

Hopefully today will be better than yesterday and tomorrow better than today.

I must admit that I am not looking forward to that transition to Kindergarten, though, come September.

(We had a great vacation to Cape Cod a couple of weeks ago and I’m hoping to post pictures shortly!!)
