Ink Jet Transfers Trials

Posted on Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 at 10:05 pm

All trials were done onto gesso coated cold press water color paper. Any transparency transfers were done with 3M universal transparency film for ink jet transfers. The matte photo paper was something I just happened to have around, so I don’t have any details on it.

For my current purposes, I’m happiest with the ink jet print to matte photo paper and transferred with Golden’s Soft Gel Medium. Pieces of the matte photo paper go with the transfer and I really like how it softens the transfer a bit.

I also like the more abstract and even softer transfer from an ink jet print to a transparency and then transfered with Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium.

The transfer from the matte photo paper via Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium may be useful at other times, too.

A: This is the inkjet trasfer one that will meet my current needs.

This one was printed from my HP (I think) to matte photo paper at high quality. I lightened the image from the original trials you’ll see below, and I think that helped. I coated the picture with Golden Soft Gel medium and then pressed it down onto the gesso coated cold press paper. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed with my knuckles over the image. I checked at about 20 seconds and it had not transfered enough. I then rubbed some more and got the above. Bits of the photo paper came with the transfer, but I just gently burnished most of them off right after making the trasfer. I like the muted effect caused by some of the paper coming.

I tried one with a transparency and the Golden’s Soft Gel, and it came out like E, below. Much like the Liquitex matte medium gel and a transparency. Could have its uses, but its not what I’m looking for right now.

B: This one was printed on my HP 932c desk jet. It is before I lightened the image, all the rest are before I lightened the image. Its printed to a transparency. I used Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium to transfer the image.

C: This was printed from the Canon i900d (photo printer) to matte photo paper. It was a photo quality print. I used Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium to make the transfer.

D: This was a print from the Canon i900d photo printer to a transparency. I used Liquitex Matte Fluide Medium to make the transfer. My transparencies were some general purpose ones and I’m not happy with how the fluid caused the ink to smear as it lifted off the transparencies. Some folks have great success with transparencies — I may need to try some other brands.

E: Printing from the HP 932C to a transparency. I used the Liquitex Matte Medium Gel to transfer the image. I can see using this method again. I do like the softness of it. The Golden Soft Gel on a transparency went all soppy, like the Liquitex Matte Fluid on a transparency.

F: I think I was getting closer with this. Some of these may have worked better if I lightened the image before trying the transfer. However, I still like the way the paper transfers a bit with the Golden Soft Gel.
