Saturday, December 3rd 2005 - An Anecdote

While I showered on Saturday morning, I gave Noelle two tasks. She was wandering around in just her undies and a pair of pants.

Her tasks for the 15 minutes I was in the shower were to 1) brush her teeth and 2) put on a shirt.

It does appear that she brushed her teeth, as the water in the sink was still running when I finished my shower (so she got at least as far as turning it on :-) ). When I stepped out of the showere, there she was in the doorway, looking quite cocky as she tried to pull a second pair of pants on over her first pair. She'd gone upstairs and opened her bureau and instead of selecting a shirt, she took her undies and pants off, put on a pair of fuzzy pajama bottoms and put on her pair of pants over the fuzzy pajama bottoms.

When I questioned her about this with a smile on my face, she explained that it was cold outside. Indeed, she was right.

We wandered into the living room, my explaining all the way that it wasn't so cold that 2 pairs of pants were going to be necessary. There was the dog, curled up in a ball in her crate and looking quite put upon. Not surprising, as her crate door was locked.

The offense that warranted this punishment in Noelle's mind? Poor Baily had the audacity to eat Noelle's spilled eggs off the floor.

I let Bailey out and as we continued on upstairs to get ourselves dressed, I reminded Noelle that only Mommy gets to crate Bailey, no one else. Noelle leaned over and gave Bailey a hug and said, sorry Bailey. Bailey, however, continued to look quite put upon — giving me a stare with those sad, patient eyes. I don't think she remembers the “time before Noelle”, but I think poor Bailey does have a sense that things used to be different.
